Hallux fall – knuckle-toes

Hallux fall

Hallux is the medical term for big toe. Valgus means that there is an abnormal position. A joint bump develops with a larger deviation in position. This is an enlargement of the bone at the joint of the big toe. As the toes tilt, the lump can become painful. Sometimes the lump is red and swollen. Arthritis and stiffness can also develop.

Many patients with a beginning Hallux Valgus have no complaints. Pain usually occurs at the knuckle, which can be irritated by pressure from the shoe. A painful, red bursitis develops. The movement of the bone can be limited and painful. The crooked position of the big toe can cause pain or a pressure spot on the second toe. An extremely skewed position of the big toe can even push it up the toe next to it, so that it hits the shoe. corns can develop on the joint bump. corns can also develop on other toes due to the pressure of the big toe.

Therapy

The method of treatment will depend strongly on the size of the joint bump, the position of the big toe and the mobility limitations. The (conservative) treatment is aimed at resolving the complaints. This can often be achieved by adjusting the shoes (semi-orthopedic footwear or a Zlippo). In case of severe deviation of the big toe and / or failure, surgical treatment may be the solution.

The solution

A Zlippo slipper or sandal can provide a lot of pain relief. The hallux valgus is exposed and the custom-made footbed ensures a pain-free smooth gait. A Zlippo sandal or slipper is fitted on the foot and the leather is formed around the knuckle. With the various Zlippo models it is possible to make the hallux valgus less visible or to release it completely (visibly).
